Sales seem to be up. Unemployment seems to be dropping. What do you think? Is it getting better out there? What has been your experience? Everyone sure seemed to be out shopping for the holidays. What do you expect 2011 to be like?

Small Businesses Find Resources and Support Beyond Books at the Local Library

For years library patrons have come to their local library prepared to leave with resources of the paper variety but now many small businesses are depending on the public library to help with business needs as well. Books covering a variety of business topics, from hiring practices to new technology, regularly leave the library in the arms of small business owners according to Circulation Supervisor Laura Siscoe, at the Eureka Public Library. But just as often these days, business owners come to the library seeking immediate help with resolving issues facing their business. Library services such as free Internet or Wi-Fi access, public computers with printing and scanning options, and copying and faxing services can save the day for a business owner in a rural community.

Library staff is also often knowledgeable about the technology involved in creating and maintaining a web presence, the development of marketing materials, or in providing help and contacts for local press releases. Networking opportunities are another resource available at the local library as it serves in many rural areas as the community center as well.

Chef Katie Finds Success

Chef Katie has finished her season for this year as an upscale food cart vendor in Eureka, Illinois. During the Summer, Katie would set up for business near the Eureka Public Library. It has been great for her and for the library. This innovative and effective partnership has resulted in great publicity for the business. Many customers ask Katie about where she goes as a personal chef and what kinds of events she is willing to do. As of October 4th she will be teaching her 3rd class at ICC and feels like this has happened because of her experiences and the exposure she received here at EPLD. In the image you see Chef Katie presenting a check to Eureka Public Library Director Nancy Scott as part of a fundraiser. Thanks Chef Katie!

Go To Eureka Public Library Workforce Network For Career Counselling, Job Searching, Resume Help And More

There is a satellite Workforce Network office located within the Eureka Public Library, with their main office located at One Technology Plaza in Peoria. Chris Johnson works in Eureka at the library every Thursday from 9-4 as the Workforce Career Counselor. Chris helps with resume development, job searches and connecting people with online and local job resources. Workforce maintains 4 computers with Internet access and software for resume development and job search/skill help. These computers are available to anyone walking through the doors whenever the library is open. Chris has started teaching basic computer classes at EPLD on a regular basis. The classes are very popular, both with people looking to improve their ability on the computer as well as individuals looking for practice to help with job searches and employment skills.

Our ILEADU team recently made a presentation at a Rural Partners of Illinois Board of Directors meeting on September 8th, 2010 in Springfield. During the Q & A portion of the presentation we were asked if we will be able to sustain our efforts after the grant expires? Also, how will we measure success?

Our project is a community portal. The content has to do with economic issues, community, growth and adapting. We have defined several commonalities we share such as BUSINESS RESOURCES, EMPLOYMENT RESOURCES, COMMUNITY HUBS, KIDS AND TEEN SPACE, DISCUSSION, EVENTS and NEWS.
